Day trips with kids

Everything worth doing with children around Zagreb sits within ninety minutes. The thermal water parks run year-round and save the winter, castles and museums suit the shoulder seasons, and the villages are best in spring and autumn.

Where to go

Terme Tuhelj

A thermal complex with indoor and outdoor water parks, slides and children's areas. It runs through winter, which makes it the great February rescue: freezing outside, warm water inside, and children who are finally tired. Day visit or overnight.

Aquae Vivae, Krapinske Toplice

Another thermal water park, larger and with more serious slides. Same proposition: a full day in water regardless of the weather outside.

Krapina Neanderthal Museum

An unexpectedly modern and well-made museum on the site of an actual Neanderthal settlement. Multimedia, life-size reconstructions, a clear narrative. One of the best museums in the country for children, and adults are not bored either.

ages 6–14 · ≈ 1 hour

Trakošćan Castle

Croatia's most postcard-perfect castle: towers, a lake, forest all around. A museum of armour and interiors inside, and an hour-long path around the lake outside. "Castle plus walk" works far better with children than a museum alone.

ages 5–14 · ≈ 1 hour 15 min

Kumrovec

An open-air village museum: preserved 19th-century peasant houses, craft workshops, live demonstrations. Children like that it is all real and that you can walk inside the houses.

ages 6–14 · ≈ 45 min

Samobor

The closest and easiest outing. A small town with a stream, a park, a ruined hilltop fortress and famous custard slices. The climb to the fortress is a manageable hike from about five years old.

ages 0–12 · ≈ 30 min

Rastoke

A village on waterfalls, with houses above the current and water roaring between the foundations. Compact, spectacular, done in an hour or so. Often combined with Plitvice.

ages 4–14 · ≈ 1.5 hours

Plitvice Lakes

Beautiful, but honestly: the routes are long, the walkways narrow, a pushchair is essentially impossible, and summer brings crowds. Hard work with under-sevens. With older children and an early start, excellent. Buy tickets in advance.

ages 7+ · ≈ 2 hours · full day

Logistics

Nearly all of this is much easier by car: buses to Zagorje exist but are infrequent and involve changes, which with children is needless stress. Day rental is available and the tolled motorways are good.

Leave early. A day with children compresses on its own, and the difference between setting off at eight and at eleven is the difference between an outing and a race.

Check opening hours and seasons before leaving: castles and museums keep shorter winter timetables, and the water parks fill at weekends and sometimes want a booking.
